About EasyJet
Based at Luton Airport, EasyJet employs over 8,000 people including more than 4,500 cabin crew and some 2,000 pilots. Since 2000, the airline has been floated on the London Stock Exchange. EasyJet's business model traces its routes to Southwest Airlines, a U.S. airline that pioneered cost-saving practices including maximising aircraft use, implementing fast turnaround times, and charging for extras such as meals. Stylised as easyJet, the airline's call sign is "Easy" and its IATA and ICAO airline designator codes are U2 and EZY, respectively.
EasyJet operated a fleet of Boeing 737 planes until 2002. EasyJet's relatively young fleet comprises of Airbus A319-100 and A320-200 aircraft. The airline is the A319's largest operator in the world. EasyJet will see the delivery of 100 Airbus A320neo aircraft between 2017 and 2022, which will replace existing aircraft. The A319 will also be phased out from 2015 with the arrival of additional A320-200s and the A320neo.
EasyJet has a comprehensive network of operating bases. In the UK, bases include Bristol, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Glasgow, Liverpool, London Luton, London Southend, London Stansted, Manchester, and Newcastle. European operating bases include Berlin Schonefeld, Hamburg, Lisbon, Lyon-Saint Exupery, Milan Malpensa, Naples International, Nice Cote D'Azur, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Paris Orly, Rome Fiumicino, Toulouse and Amsterdam airports. The airline's subsidiary and franchise operation EasyJet Switzerland is based at Geneva and Basel-Mulhouse airports.
History
Launched in March 1995, EasyJet flew its first flights in November 1995 from Luton to Glasgow and Edinburgh. From the start, the airline branded itself as an affordable and low-cost way of flying. By April 1996, EasyJet began its expansion into Europe with flights to Amsterdam, Nice and Barcelona from Luton. In 1997, the carrier received its own Air Operating Certificate and opened a second base at Liverpool Airport. The airline's rising popularity led to the launch of 'Airline', an ITV television programme that attracted over 10 million viewers during its first series in 1999.
EasyJet's growth has been helped with acquisitions of other carriers. In 1998, the airline purchased a stake in Swiss charter airline TEA Basel and rebranded it as EasyJet Switzerland. The Swiss acquisition was followed in 2002 with the purchase of low-cost airline Go, which created Europe's largest air transport network at the time. In 2007, EasyJet purchased Gatwick-based GB Airways. By 2009, the airline solidified itself as a European airline with services to 27 countries and with over 50 percent of its passengers originating from outside the UK. In 2010, EasyJet emerged as the UK's largest airline with more than 500 routes.
